New Co-op Milborne Port

Land at Gainsborough, Milborne Port, South Somerset DT9 5BH

A successful start to February.  South Somerset District Council have today approved Landmark Estates’ scheme for a new Co-op convenience store at land off Gainsborough, via delegated Officer powers.

Measuring 350sqm and with 26 on-site parking spaces, the store will replace the existing village Co-op which is too small and has no guaranteed customer parking spaces.  An improved convenience store will improve consumer choice for residents, by accommodating a wider range of goods and services, whilst ensuring expenditure remains in the local economy and increasing job opportunities.

The Co-op’s Gareth Dexter, Regional Acquisition Manager says “This is really great news and, subject to discharging the necessary planning conditions, we can aim to get the new store launched later this year”.

Landmark Estates’ Planning Manager, Phil Holdcroft states “The application was preceded by a comprehensive Community Engagement Strategy where meetings with the Parish Council, local amenity groups and a ‘drop-in’ event ensured that we were able to engage with interested parties and fully explore all issues raised.  Significantly, 96% of those local residents who attended the drop-in event supported the scheme.  A comprehensive planning application was subsequently submitted”.

As a result of Landmark’s diligent process, the application was subject to only one letter of objection.  Given that the scheme addressed all technical considerations, the Planning Officer was able to approve the scheme via delegated powers. It was concluded that “the proposed development will cause no harm to the character of the area, the setting of the nearby listed buildings and conservation area, residential amenity or highway safety, in accordance with the local planning policies and objectives of the NPPF”.
